Do you want to cut down on the cavities you or your children experience?
During our previous article, we discussed how your dietary choices can affect the health of your teeth. This, along with proper oral hygiene, can be your best defenses against tooth decay.
However, there is another option that adds another layer of protection to your teeth: dental sealants.
Dental sealants are a coating that is painted on your teeth and offers another layer of protection against tooth decay. Sealants are a thin, usually hardly visible, liquid plastic that is typically placed on the chewing surface of your molars.
When the liquid sealant is coated on the surface of your teeth, it quickly bonds to the surface of your teeth and into the grooves of your molars. After the liquid hardens, it creates a protective barrier for your teeth.
The most common group of people who receive sealants are children. Typically, sealants will be placed on molars as soon as they break through the gum line. Having sealants placed at this time will protect your children’s teeth through the years they are most prone to cavities. In addition to children, adults with fillings or tooth decay might also benefit from sealants. Sealants can protect molars from additional damage.
If you, or your child, have received sealants, you can expect them to offer protection for about ten years. However, your sealants should be checked for chipping, damage, and wear at your regular checkups. Sealants should not replace your routine dental visits, brushing, using fluoride, or any other hygiene practices. While sealants keep bacteria and sugars out of and off of your teeth, your routine oral hygiene practices will help to strengthen your teeth.
